Erinaceus Europaeus is the hedgehog we call the Wild British Hedgehog. It is in serious need of human help and sadly has been overlooked for the last 70 years. So much so that hedgehogs are now on the red list in the UK and classed as 'vulnerable to extinction.'
Hedgehogs need more habitat and where there isn't hedgerow habitat, they need little gaps through human made structures (fences, walls, gates), doorways to come and go in gardens. This is the least we can do. They need to visit a variety of gardens every night during their waking period, to feed, socialise, nest and meet mates. They need us to provide organic gardens, so go chemical-free. They would love a sunken log pile that creates a feast of creepy crawlies and a buffet stop for hedgehogs at night, and also a wild area. They enjoy a mixture of long and short grass.
Some hedgehogs never hibernate and with climate change that also has an effect. However it is generally said that by April each year most hedgehogs will become active again and stay active until late Autumn, sometimes longer. Females have two litters a year of hoglets. The hoglets born later summer, early Autumn have less of a chance to put on weight in time for hibernation and every year rescues take some of these in, sometimes to 'over-winter' them. These first year hogs are called Autumn Juveniles and are particularly vulnerable to a number of things. Their first year in natural hibernation can be a very poor nest, so this is why helping them with a hedgehog house is something positive we can do as humans to give them a helping hand.<\/p>
