This is to continue to help raise awareness about hedgehogs and their basic\u00a0needs.\u00a0<\/p><p>Hedgerow is where they live, so if you want to help hedgehogs and other wildlife, plant and retain more hedges.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>The older a hedge, the more nature has come to rely on it. A mixed native deciduous is a good choice. \u00a0<\/p><p>If it contains ivy, that is fine.\u00a0 Ivy is a vine and has its own root system.\u00a0 It doesn't kill or smother trees and hedges, it provides valuable food over winter and highly valued by birds.\u00a0<\/p><p>Where fences, walls and gates exist, consider a 'Hedgehog Highway' so that hedgehogs can still travel on their dusk til dawn walks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Look left, right and the foot of your garden.\u00a0 Can they get through? If not, please email us to create a free Highway. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"mailto:wildthingskeyworth@gmail.com\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wildthingskeyworth@gmail.com<\/a><\/p><p>We dressed up as hedgehogs for the Apple Day at Abundance and walked 3 laps plus a bit of Keyworth playing field, which makes the mile distance. \u00a0So if you want to walk a mile, away from traffic, that is a good location to test out the distance and \u2018Be More Hedgehog.\u2019<\/p><p><img src=\"https:\/\/images.teemill.com\/oacazgxywvmgj6qwikb0srju42yksyubgwvhhpofwz1pwyd7.jpg.jpg?w=1140&amp;v=2\" alt=\"oacazgxywvmgj6qwikb0srju42yksyubgwvhhpofwz1pwyd7.jpg.jpg?w=1140&amp;v=2\" \/>Above photo: Talking hedgehog with the new MP for Rushcliffe - James Naish.<\/p><p><br \/>How do hedgehogs walk so far on 10cm legs? Amazing athleticism isn\u2019t it and as you can imagine they get hungry and thirsty.\u00a0<\/p><p>So you can put out shallow bowls of water and kitten or cat biscuits in a feed station which is good support for them and they will visit.<\/p><p>Remember hedgehogs are looking for places to sleep and rest during the day, hedges, leaf and log piles and chemical free gardens.<\/p><p>As temperatures drop below zero for a week or more, some will get sleepy and hibernate or may sleep for a few days and wake up again.\u00a0<\/p><p>It is often temperature dependent, rather than time of year dependent. When we had a mild Christmas last year, hedgehogs were still up visiting us.\u00a0 Also some hedgehogs never hibernate.<\/p><p>Bonfire Night is a major hazard to hedgehogs all across the country. Many are killed outright or badly burnt or suffer smoke inhalation as they were sleeping in a stack that someone built up.\u00a0 The hedgehog of course, thinks it looks like home and moves in.<\/p><p>So please rebuild any stacks on the day of lighting, otherwise you risk harming a hog or other wildlife like frogs.\u00a0 Our wildlife friends see these stacks as a safe haven, not realising they are a potential death trap.<\/p><p>Bonfires in general are becoming more and more anti-social.\u00a0 No one wants to breathe in smoke which may exacerbate health conditions and neither do our pets or wildlife.\u00a0Instead, consider piling up leaves and sticks or have a compost bin.
