Exciting News: On Friday 13th October 2023, we made further steps towards the start of a \u2018swift project\u2019 at St Mary Magdalene Church, Keyworth.

Nick and I met the guys from Kinoulton village who are well versed in swift provision, something I learnt at their Swift Evening in the summer and subsequently at Rutland Global Birdfair and was keen, along with Nick to explore further.

We climbed 40 narrow steps to reach the tower. The first platform was where the clock gets wound weekly by Nick and then a few steps further you are in the bell chamber.

The window we were looking at in particular is the most accessible. It is incredibly tight everywhere up there though.

Measurements were taken of the window space and the recce proved fruitful with plenty of positivity that five boxes could fit this window alone.

In Kinoulton there are boxes all the way round, but not all towers are the same inside and so, I think it will be a case of getting these done in time for April \u201824 and see what happens from there. If we think other windows can be made accessible we can explore that too.

We know we have swifts on Main Street, Keyworth, Notts that come back every year but they haven\u2019t had access in the church tower before, or at least in modern times and so this is incredibly exciting.

S<\/span>wifts are incredibly clean birds, and they are also red listed as more and more housing and roof space is sealed up, their nesting spots denied on their migratory return to U.K.<\/span>

There is of course no guarantee that they will nest there, but we will have the guidance of the guys in Kinoulton and see what we can get.

In the fullness of time we would like to get cameras up there so that potential nest activity can be relayed down into the church, similar to Kinoulton.

This would also be a lovely learning experience for all ages.
We\u2019ll see how many steps it takes to get fully there!<\/span><\/p>
